November 17 – Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day
Every year on November 17 we commemorate events connected with the struggle for freedom, democracy and human rights. This day refers to two historical periods – the protests of Czech students against the Nazi occupation in 1939, but above all the year 1989, when student demonstrations sparked the beginning of the Velvet Revolution. It led to the fall of the totalitarian regime and opened the way to democracy, freedom of expression and the basic civil rights we take for granted today.
November 17 is also International Students' Day, when we can remember the courage of young people to stand up for democracy and justice, the importance of students' rights and freedom of expression, the importance of high-quality and accessible education, and the role of students in social change,
.It is a day when schools and students around the world remember that education and freedom cannot be taken for granted.
The student council has prepared an interesting program for you, which you can look forward to as early as Friday, November 14, 2025 :)
