Class 2.C visits the SHMÚ Regional Office in Košice
On April 30, 2026, class 2.C took part in a specialist field trip to the Regional Office of the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) in Košice. The aim of the trip was to support STEM teaching in the class with a computer science specialization and to broaden the students' knowledge of modern technologies used in meteorology and environmental monitoring.
The trip included a visit to the weather garden, where the students looked at a Stevenson screen, various measuring instruments and an automatic weather station. They learned how the basic meteorological elements are measured, such as air temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction and speed, and precipitation.
During a specialist lecture, the students learned about the network of meteorological and precipitation stations in Slovakia and about how the measured data are processed. Air quality monitoring was another interesting topic. The lecturers explained how the NMSKO air quality monitoring network works in eastern Slovakia and why tracking air pollutants matters for protecting health and the environment.
The trip was very valuable for the students, as it allowed them to connect theoretical knowledge from lessons with practical demonstrations and the real work of experts in meteorology, environmental science and data processing.
We thank the staff of the regional office for their expert guidance.
