Elective subjects offered to students taking the maturita
in the school year 2026/2027
The school education program sets the following compulsory subjects in the curriculum for 4th-year students:
Slovak language and literature (SJL) – 2 h,
first foreign language (ANJ) – 3 h,
second foreign language (FJ2, 2NJ, 2RJ) – 3 h,
physical education and sport (TSV) – 2 h,
seminar in Slovak language and literature (ESI) – 2 h.
Each student chooses three four-hour and three two-hour elective subjects from the list below. We recommend making the choice in line with the core subjects of the intended university program and the elective subjects of the maturita.
The organization of the maturita (school-leaving exam) is governed by Act No. 245/2008 Coll. on Education (the Education Act), as amended (§ 74 – § 77). The subjects of the maturita at a grammar school are set by Decree No. 224/2022 Coll. on Secondary Schools, § 12:
The maturita subjects for grammar schools are
- Slovak language and literature,
- a compulsory subject from the foreign language group (at level B2),
- two elective subjects.
One elective subject must be a subject in which the student's weekly lessons over the course of grammar school studies add up to at least six lessons. Lessons from a seminar or practical class of the same focus also count towards this total. If the elective subject is a foreign language, the student takes only the oral form of the internal part of the maturita and chooses level B1 or B2.
A GJAR student may therefore choose at most one of the subjects economics, psychology and art history (if they are taught in the school year 2026/2027) for the maturita.
Further information on the maturita under the legislation currently in force:
Students can get more detailed information from their form teachers and the teachers of the relevant subjects by e-mail and through EduPage.
This school year, students will choose their elective subjects through EduPage from 24. 02. 202^ to 09. 03. 2026.
