CHALLENGE: Chcem byť SMART (I Want to Be SMART)

Implementation period: 11/2020 - 06/2021

Project focus: developing digital skills and increasing Generation Z's interest in information technology. Innovating teaching with micro:bits.

By obtaining the Pontis Foundation grant ENTER pre školy 2020 – Digitálna generácia (ENTER for Schools 2020 – Digital Generation), we gained the opportunity to offer students access to current trends in programming with hardware, which combines the development of students' algorithmic thinking with the development of soft skills, teamwork and time management.

In implementing activities that use the micro:bit with its various built-in sensors, we see great potential to make the world of digital technologies and programming more attractive to girls as well.

We plan to use the micro:bit kits in computer science lessons in the lower years of the eight-year program (tertia, quarta) when teaching the basics of programming. During lessons, students will gain programming experience in an interactive, playful way, which they will then use creatively in their micro-projects – designs for smart homes or wearable electronics.

We also want to introduce micro:bit activities to other students in the four-year and eight-year programs during Python programming lessons, activities during Europe Code Week and Raymanov týždeň (Rayman Week), or specially designed activities for girls as part of GJAR Girl's Day.

Erasmus+ KA1 Increasing the Attractiveness of the Teaching Profession through the Development of Selected Professional Competences

In the school year 2017/2018, the school carried out the Erasmus+ KA1 project Increasing the Attractiveness of the Teaching Profession through the Development of Selected Professional Competences. It was based on the proposed competence profile of teachers in the Slovak Republic, developed by a team of authors led by Beáta Kosová (2006, 2015, 2013).

The project addressed two operational objectives – to contribute to the attractiveness of the teaching profession, and to improve students' skills and competences in mathematics and develop their literacy and critical thinking.

School – A Place for Rest and Relaxation

(2015 - 2016)

With this project, our school decided to support not only sport but also a healthy lifestyle among our students. In the 11th round of the Jednota COOP Foundation grant program „Nech sa nám netúlajú“ (Keep Them Off the Streets), we succeeded with the project „Škola – miesto pre oddych aj relax“ (School – A Place for Rest and Relaxation).

We organized accompanying activities such as football, floorball and volleyball tournaments, a badminton event and an aerobics fitness marathon. Teachers of the school also took an active part in the project activities. These activities remain our contribution to the ŠkVP even after the project period ended.

Erasmus+ KA1 Foreign Languages in the Popularization of Science

(2015 - 2016)

Five teachers from the English, foreign languages and physics subject departments completed methodology courses in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, France and Malta. The teachers used the experience gained in new teaching methods to innovate the curricula of English, German, French and physics by applying new methods in teaching and linking science teaching with foreign language teaching.

The project produced working materials (an English-German-French-Slovak glossary of scientific terminology, worksheets to help students learn and remember this terminology, a database of science videos in foreign languages, relevant worksheets for selected videos using the CLIL method, physics experiments in foreign languages, and multimedia stories with scientific content) that students can use in lessons with a dual focus.

International Comenius Project Expedition of the Heart. From the Heart of Matter to the Matter of the Heart

(2013 - 2014)

The aim of the multilateral Comenius project was to introduce an international group of young people to cutting-edge science and medical research in Europe. We took the international group of students to the heart of scientific research in Europe at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), and they were introduced to medical technology used in heart surgery at the OLV cardiovascular center in Aalst. The expedition created space for meetings with scientists, patients with heart conditions and representatives of charitable organizations.

The main themes of the „Expedition of the Heart“ project were not only to awaken young people's curiosity about matter (physics) and the body (biology), but also to highlight a sense of human equality and democracy.

Learning for Life

(2009 – 2011)

The aim of the project was to create conditions for developing innovative methodologies and teaching materials that develop students' key competences in line with the school's education program.

The project activities enabled teachers to create a high-quality school education program based on the needs and abilities of the students, the quality of the teaching staff and the school's teaching resources. The outcomes take the form of an innovated school education program, methodologies and teaching materials using modern teaching methods and forms, products of student work created in innovated lessons, modern teaching aids, and the knowledge and skills teaching staff gained through further training. All of these activities continue to be put to use after the end of the project and are an inspiration for all teaching staff at the school.
