HARVEST AT GJAR

At the beginning of November, together with II. C, the septima class and teacher Z. Mackovjaková, we organized an apple harvest. An apple harvest, or apple feast, as a celebration of autumn is a wonderful way to close this beautiful season. Even though there were fewer apples this year, they tasted great and not a single one was left over... No wonder, since good apples are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, pectin and fiber.

Few people know, however, that our school garden does not have just any apple trees! We have old varieties of the domestic apple (developed roughly before 1950, when modern breeding methods were not yet in use) – Jonathan and Antonovka.

The Jonathan variety, for example, is an American winter variety discovered in 1826 on Mr. Rick's farm in Woodstock (Atlas starých odrôd jabloní a hrušiek 50 na 50, https://lnk.sk/hmbh). The fruits are medium-sized, and thanks to its sweet, slightly spicy flavor it is one of the most popular varieties. In the 20th century, the "Jonatánka" was an important commercial variety.

The second variety, Antonovka, was first presented at an exhibition in Novgorod in 1896. It was named in honor of Anton, an amateur gardener in whose garden the tree was found...

It seems that every old variety has its own story... A story of its origin (its discoverer or breeder), of how it spread and found its place on the market or in households. Many of them are surrounded by real legends that are, to a greater or lesser extent, based on truth.

Thank you all for your help. We are already looking forward to next year's harvest!

We can also mark Earth Day (April 22) by including the following activities in our lessons:

FILM WELCOME TO SODOM

Agbogbloshie near Accra in Ghana is the largest electronic waste dump in the world, where about 6,000 women, men and children live and work. This place is called Sodom. Every year, about 250,000 tons of discarded computers, smartphones, air conditioners and other devices illegally end up there. Accept the invitation and do not miss this documentary from one of the most toxic places in the world: https://lnk.sk/sko9
The film is available free of charge.

ONLINE COURSE THE SECRET LIFE OF ELECTRONICS

Take a look at how desks and their equipment have changed over the past 100 years, count the electrical appliances in your household, and look at how they are produced and disposed of: http://www.elektroodpad.zivica.sk/

ECO QUIZ

Throughout the whole month, from 22.4.2021 to 21.5.2021, you will have the opportunity to learn many interesting facts about ecology in a fun way while playing for fantastic prizes. The quiz can be played free of charge, either directly on the website ekokviz.eu or via the mobile app. Truly anyone can take part!

VIDEO Curious Questions About Waste

The video was made by our septima students A. Dzurillová and V. Jenčová as part of the Young Reporters for the Environment program. It is also suitable for younger students. Here is a link to a short video in which they present the challenge they both took part in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxOraT3AGRc

FLOWERS

If anyone would like to help with repotting flowers, planting a flower bed or other work in the school garden... we can help this way too, of course, as far as the pandemic situation allows.

We would like to draw your attention to interesting websites with ideas for activities:

Certification period: 2019 - 2021

On February 27, 201, Gymnázium Jána Adama Raymana had its Environmental Action Plan for the certification period 2019 - 2021 with the priority theme Waste approved.

Among the strengths of GJAR is that we have partially introduced separate collection of paper, plastics, batteries and bottle caps, the school takes part in several programs and projects with an eco theme, and the topic of waste is part of lessons such as civics, chemistry, biology and others.

Among the weaknesses of GJAR, we listed the lack of containers for separate collection, the fact that we do not separate biowaste, and that we create unnecessary waste at events organized by the school.

We welcome any form of help; our ambition is to involve active parents, grandparents and friends of the school in the program as well.

Goals of our Environmental Action Plan (with links to the individual activities added over time):

  1. Make waste sorting more effective and thus reduce the volume of mixed municipal waste by 10% by the end of the certification period
  2. Run and expand an information campaign on the importance of waste sorting throughout the certification period
  3. Reduce the production of plastic waste at events organized by the school by 10% by the end of the certification period
  4. Run and expand an information campaign on how to minimize waste throughout the period

Certification period: 2017/2018 – 2018/2019

On January 17, 2018, Gymnázium Jána Adama Raymana had its Environmental Action Plan approved. In preparing it, formulating the goals and planning the activities, we drew on suggestions from students who took part in a questionnaire survey on the topic Greenery and Nature Protection, as well as suggestions from members and non-members of the Green School committee. The students' answers in the questionnaires revealed the school's strengths and weaknesses in this area.

Among the strengths of GJAR is that we have a well-kept garden where the lawn is mowed regularly and the greenery is maintained, and which includes a compost area for garden waste. The school garden offers enough space for various activities. The school runs separate collection – of batteries, PET bottles, PET bottle caps, paper and aluminum. The students noted that our school has active people and there is always something going on, and they also appreciated the high-quality and wide range of field trips and talks with experts.

As weaknesses of GJAR, the students consider that we grow few flowers in the classrooms, make little use of the school garden in lessons, and have no fruit trees or shrubs in it. We do not deal with the possibility of collecting and using rainwater. We keep the lights on in classrooms even when it is light outside. Many students expressed in the questionnaires that they are poorly informed about activities at the school.

Goals of our Environmental Action Plan (links to the individual activities)

  1. Place one living plant on every classroom window
  2. Create conditions for teaching in the school garden
  3. Build a relaxation and education zone with a garden pond and a herb garden
  4. Plan and carry out 15 regular activities during lessons aimed at gaining and deepening knowledge of nature protection
  5. Create a place for informal meetings of the school's students, the committee and the Green School creative groups
